The Thermo Diet

Nine laws for eating in a way that raises the energy flowing through your cells, instead of forcing your body into a stress state and calling the result discipline.

By Christopher Walker

The premise

Your cells can run on glucose with good oxygen use, or they can run on fatty acids under stress. The first state produces heat, energy and a body that feels safe enough to spend. The second conserves, throttles output, and treats every demand as a threat to survive rather than a job to do.

Almost every popular diet of the last thirty years pushes you toward the second state and then sells you something to manage the symptoms. The nine laws push in the other direction.

The nine laws

One chapter each. They are ordered, but they are not a sequence you have to earn your way through — most people find that fixing two of them changes more than they expected.

  1. Don't be deficient the law of micronutrients

Almost every symptom people bring to a supplement aisle starts here, and almost none of them get tested for it.

  2. Eat more salt the law of electrochemical signaling

Forty years of advice told you the opposite. The advice was built on a population you are probably not in.

  3. Eat sugar the law of metabolic preference

The most argued-with sentence in the book. Your cells have a preferred fuel and it is not the one you were told to fear.

  4. Don't eat PUFAs the law of toxic oils

Industrial seed oils entered the food supply as a disposal problem for a manufacturing byproduct, and stayed.

  5. Eat less protein the law of amino acid balance

Not less protein than you need. The right kinds, in the right ratio, with the parts of the animal nobody eats any more.

  6. Don't eat vegetables the law of plant defense

Plants that cannot run away defend themselves chemically. Leaves and stems are where they keep it.

  7. Balance your hormones the law of leverage

Hormones are downstream of the first six laws far more often than they are a separate problem to treat.

  8. Control inflammation the law of fire

Useful in a short burst and corrosive when it never stops. Most people are running it continuously.

  9. Lower serotonin the law of chemical warfare

The most counter-intuitive position in the book, and the one the popular version gets exactly backwards.
