Probiotics: Read the Strain and the CFU

A probiotic is, by its scientific definition, live microorganisms that confer a benefit when taken in adequate amounts — and that definition is also a shopping guide. Two things make a probiotic specific: which strains it contains and how many live organisms it delivers, counted in CFU. The word "probiotic" alone tells you very little; the strain and the CFU tell you almost everything.

What it is

Probiotics are live microorganisms, usually bacteria from groups like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, sometimes a beneficial yeast. They're named at three levels — genus, species, and strain — and the strain is the most specific part, because effects studied for one strain don't automatically carry to another. Because the organisms are alive, count and viability through shelf life matter as much as the names on the panel.

How it works

Probiotics are studied for how they interact with the existing community of microbes in the gut. The accepted definition hinges on "adequate amounts," which is why the CFU figure exists: too few live organisms and there's no meaningful dose. People generally take them as a steady daily habit to support a balanced gut, the same way they'd keep any other routine supplement.

Why the form & source matter

A useful probiotic states its strains and a CFU count, ideally guaranteed through the expiration date rather than only at the time of manufacture. Higher CFU isn't automatically better — the right number depends on the strains — but a product that won't disclose either figure is hard to judge. Capsules, chewables, and powders all work; what matters is that the live count survives to when you take it.

How Monthlees uses it

Monthlees offers probiotics across formats — including a 40-billion-CFU formula, chewables, and digestive blends — with the strains and counts stated on the label. That disclosure is the point: it lets you compare one probiotic to another on strain and CFU instead of taking "contains probiotics" on faith.

Frequently asked questions

What makes one probiotic different from another?

The specific strains it contains and the live count (CFU) it delivers.

What does CFU mean?

Colony-forming units — the number of live organisms per serving; the definition of a probiotic depends on an adequate amount.

Is a higher CFU always better?

No — the appropriate count depends on the strains; disclosure matters more than a big number.

How are they usually taken?

As a steady daily habit, in capsules, chewables, or powders.
