Psyllium Husk: The Gel-Forming Fiber

Psyllium husk is a soluble fiber with one defining trait: it absorbs water and forms a gel. That gel is the reason psyllium is the fiber people reach for when they want help with normal regularity — it adds soft bulk and holds onto water as it moves through. What it is

Psyllium comes from the husk of Plantago ovata seeds. It's classified as a soluble, gel-forming fiber that mostly resists fermentation, which sets it apart from fibers that ferment quickly and produce more gas. Supplements use the milled husk as a powder or capsules, and it's the same fiber whether it's flavored, unflavored, or pressed into a capsule.
